What Macro Level Social Work Means

Macro level social work is social work aimed at systems rather than one client at a time. The BLS describes it as social workers getting involved “at a broad level to help community organizations and policymakers develop or improve social programs, services, and conditions.” Advocacy runs through it: BLS notes that social workers advocate with and for their constituents, and for the profession itself at local, state and national levels.

In an MSW, macro practice is a concentration. You still earn the same degree as a clinical student, and you still complete the generalist foundation. The difference is the second half: courses in community organizing, program planning, nonprofit management and policy analysis, and a field placement inside an agency, coalition or government office instead of a counseling room.

Schools name it many ways. The 142 options here include “Community Practice” (Yeshiva, DePaul), “Macro Practice” (University of Houston, University of Georgia), “Policy, Administration and Community Practice (PAC)” at Arizona State, “Management and Policy” at Rutgers and “Social Change and Innovation” at USC.

Micro, Mezzo and Macro Level Social Work

CSWE’s accreditation standards expect every generalist practitioner to apply ethical principles and critical thinking “at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels,” working with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities. Clinical tracks concentrate on the individual and family end of that list. Macro tracks concentrate on organizations and communities.

Mezzo level social work sits between them: work with groups and with the organizations people belong to. Several programs deliberately straddle the line. Salisbury University pairs “Clinical Social Work and Advocacy” with “Social Change and Leadership,” East Carolina University teaches “Clinical-Community Social Work Practice from a Relational Perspective,” and Boston University lets clinical students add an optional Macro minor. If you aren’t sure which level you want, a blended program keeps both open.

Who a Macro Concentration Suits

A macro track suits you if you are drawn to running programs, organizing neighborhoods, writing grants, shaping policy or leading a nonprofit. It fits career changers from public administration, community organizing, AmeriCorps or nonprofit staff roles, and working social service employees: CUNY Hunter College runs a One-Year Residency Program as a work-study route for social service employees.

It suits you less if you want to provide therapy. BLS notes that a clinical license takes supervised clinical experience after the MSW, so if the LCSW is your goal, compare the clinical MSW programs first.

142 programs

Program facts come from each school's own pages, reviewed September 2026. CSWE status comes from CSWE's directory of accredited programs.

How Macro MSW Programs Compare on Cost

The macro set is large enough to show the full price range. Across the 99 programs with an estimate, estimated tuition (published per-credit rate times credits, before fees) runs from $11,070 to $111,456, with a median of $42,600. Per-credit rates run from $203 at Savannah State to $2,322 at USC. Figures below use the resident rate where the school sets one.

Program Macro focus Format Credits Estimated tuition
UPR-Rio Piedras Maestría en Trabajo Social Administración de Programas Sociales Campus 54 $11,070
Savannah State University MSW Social Administration Campus 60 $12,180
UNC Wilmington MSW Macro Campus, hybrid 61 $19,530

Read the fine print on the low end. Rio Piedras’s $205 per credit comes from its 2024-25 cost schedule, and Savannah State’s $203 is the in-state rate for a full-time-only program. At the top, the University of Denver’s 81 credits reflect its quarter calendar. Model your own total with the MSW cost calculator, or browse the affordable online MSW programs.

What You Study in a Macro Concentration

Every accredited MSW teaches CSWE’s nine competencies. Competency 5, Engage in Policy Practice, asks you to identify social policy “at the local, state, federal, and global level” that affects wellbeing, service delivery and access to services. A macro concentration takes that competency, and practice with organizations and communities, as its center.

The track names point to three emphases:

Emphasis Examples of what schools call it
Community practice and organizing “Community Organizing, Planning and Development” (CUNY Hunter), “Community Organizing” (UConn), “Community Capacity Building (CCB)” (Cal State Dominguez Hills), “Civic and community engagement” (University of the District of Columbia)
Leadership, management and administration “Management and Community Practice” (UNLV), “Human services management” (Andrews), “Organizational Management and Leadership” (CUNY Hunter), “Program Planning and Administration” (Chicago State)
Policy and advocacy “Policy Practice” (UConn), “Policy practice and advocacy” (Fordham), “Management and Policy” (Rutgers), “Policy and Advocacy elective cluster” (University of Alabama)

Some programs combine all three in one concentration, such as Catholic University’s “Community Administration Policy Practice (CAPP)” and Bryn Mawr’s “Communities, Organizations, Policy, and Advocacy.” Others add a justice lens: the University of Denver offers “Ecological Justice,” and Ohio State offers “Community and social justice.” See every concentration in the MSW specializations guide.

Field Placements in Macro Practice

CSWE requires at least 900 field hours in a master’s program, and the median across these options is 900. In a macro track, your specialized placement is where you practice planning, organizing or policy work. Arizona State requires two 480-hour internships (960 hours), and the University of Georgia splits its hours into 312 in the generalist year and 600 in the specialization year. USC and Yeshiva require 1,200.

Online programs still need a local placement. Appalachian State’s online advanced standing MSW pairs a face-to-face practicum with an online seminar.

Licensure for Macro Social Workers

Licensing matters for macro practitioners too. BLS notes that all states license clinical social workers and that some states also require nonclinical social workers to hold a license or credential. CSWE adds that most states and territories require licensure candidates to be graduates of a CSWE-accredited program.

That makes accreditation status worth checking in this set. 129 options are fully accredited and 13 are in candidacy or pre-candidacy, including Calvin University’s Macro track and Trevecca Nazarene University’s Community Impact and Organizational Practice concentration, which is in pre-candidacy.

ASWB offers four exams: Bachelors, Masters, Advanced Generalist and Clinical. Each has 122 questions and a 4-hour limit, and the Advanced Generalist exam costs US$260. Which exam your state uses, and for which license, is set by your board. Start with the social work license guide and the LMSW license guide, then map your steps with the license pathway tool.

Macro Social Worker Pay and Settings

BLS has no separate macro category. The closest is “social workers, all other,” which had 62,930 jobs and a median wage of $71,900 in May 2025; the middle half earned between $51,900 and $97,040, and the top 10% more than $115,610.

State medians spread widely: $102,520 in Washington, $101,280 in Massachusetts, $96,380 in the District of Columbia, $84,240 in Texas and $84,010 in New York. Across all social workers, BLS counts state and local government, excluding education and hospitals, as the largest employer at 27% of jobs. See social work careers for other paths.

How to Choose a Macro MSW Program

Use this checklist against the programs above:

  • Confirm macro is a full concentration. Messiah University lists “Leadership in organizations” as an optional focus; Portland State names a dedicated concentration, “Advanced Macro Practice.”
  • Check advanced standing in the macro track. UNC Wilmington offers advanced standing only in Direct Practice. The University of Houston’s campus MSW gives BSW holders one year and 34 credits.
  • Check campus limits. UALR’s “Social and Organizational Impact” concentration is offered on the main campus only.
  • Compare the out-of-state price. Rutgers charges $1,132 per credit to every online student, while UT Arlington publishes $37,922 for non-Texas residents in its out-of-state online program.
  • Check testing rules. 54 options state that they don’t require the GRE or will waive it. Inter American University of Puerto Rico requires a standardized graduate admission test, and Arizona State asks for the GRE or MAT only below a 3.20 junior and senior GPA.

With a BSW, run your record through the advanced standing checker, or filter by budget and state with the program matcher.

Trade-Offs Before You Apply

Macro vs clinical. A macro track trains you to run and change programs, while a clinical track prepares you for the supervised clinical experience BLS says the clinical license requires after graduation. If you might want both, a blended program such as Salisbury’s or East Carolina’s leaves the clinical route open.

Online vs campus. Online programs widen the list to Rutgers, Case Western Reserve and Boston University, but your placement still happens in an agency near you, so the program has to be able to place you locally.

Advanced standing vs traditional. Advanced standing cuts cost: the University of Missouri-St Louis estimate drops from $41,820 to $16,728. You trade away the generalist year, so your single placement has to carry your macro experience. Compare all advanced standing MSW programs.
