How to Become an LCSW: Requirements, Supervised Hours and the Clinical Exam
How Do You Become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker?
To become a licensed clinical social worker, you earn a CSWE-accredited MSW, get your state's master's-level license, complete supervised clinical practice and pass the ASWB Clinical exam. Most state boards set that supervision at about two years: 35 of the 52 jurisdictions checked require 3,000 hours, and the full range runs from 1,500 to 4,000. Compare clinical MSW programs first, then check your state's exact route with the license pathway tool.

How to Become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker
The clinical license is the one that lets you diagnose and treat on your own. Every clinical license in the state board records is built the same basic way: a master’s degree, a period of supervised clinical work, and an exam. ASWB, which writes the exam most boards use, says clinical and independent licenses add supervised practice to the degree and exam that every license needs.
Here is the order most MSW graduates follow:
- Finish a CSWE-accredited MSW, ideally with a clinical concentration and a clinical field placement. Every accredited MSW includes at least 900 hours of field education, according to CSWE.
- Get your state’s master’s-level license, such as the LMSW, LGSW or LSW. In most states this means passing the ASWB Masters exam.
- Line up a qualified supervisor and, where the board requires it, file a supervision plan before you start counting hours. South Carolina, Kansas and North Dakota are among the boards that tie hours to an approved plan or supervisor.
- Complete your supervised clinical hours, typically 3,000 over at least two years.
- Pass the ASWB Clinical exam and any state law exam your board lists.
- Apply for the clinical license.
The details inside each step are where states differ, and the rest of this page lays those differences out with counts taken straight from the 52 board records: all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
What the Clinical License Lets You Do
The BLS describes clinical social workers as professionals who diagnose and treat mental, behavioral and emotional problems. They provide individual, group, family and couples therapy and help clients build strategies to change behavior or cope with hard situations. The BLS lists hospitals, ambulatory health care services, individual and family services agencies and schools among the places they work.
The license is what makes that work independent. In 50 of the 52 records, the top clinical license is marked as allowing independent practice. Before you hold it, you practice clinically only under supervision, which is why the supervised years matter so much to your timeline.

Supervised Hours: How the States Compare
The hour count is the number most people want first. Here is how the 52 jurisdictions set it for the clinical license.
| Clinical experience required | Jurisdictions | Which ones |
|---|---|---|
| 1,500 hours of face-to-face psychotherapy within two years | 1 | Florida |
| 3,000 hours | 35 | Including California, Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia and Washington |
| 3,200 hours | 3 | Arizona, Delaware, Maine |
| 3,500 hours | 2 | Massachusetts, Oregon |
| 3,600 hours | 1 | New Mexico |
| 4,000 hours | 3 | Arkansas, Michigan, Minnesota |
| Set in years rather than hours | 6 | Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, South Dakota |
Two cautions go with this table. First, Colorado’s 3,000 hours may drop: its board is revising Rule 1.14 to carry out House Bill 26-1002, which lowers the clinical hours, and the public hearing is set for November 13, 2026. Second, the totals hide structure. Delaware’s 3,200 hours include 1,600 of clinical experience under direct supervision, and Minnesota’s LICSW accepts 4,000 to 8,000 hours of clinical practice, at least 1,800 of them in direct client contact.
Many boards also set a floor for direct client work inside the total. California asks for at least 2,000 clinical hours, 750 of them face-to-face psychotherapy. Arizona asks for 1,600 hours of direct client contact using psychotherapy, Virginia for 1,380 hours of face-to-face client contact, and Oregon for 2,000 direct client hours.
Clinical Requirements in Large States
The data table on this page quotes every board’s wording. This shorter comparison lines up the pieces for the states where the most MSW students study.
| State | Clinical license | Hours | Supervision | Time frame |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| California | LCSW | 3,000, with 2,000 clinical | Weekly, with 52 weeks of individual or triadic | At least 104 weeks |
| Texas | LCSW | 3,000 | 100 hours | At least 24 months |
| New York | LCSW | 36 months full time | 100 hours | Part time up to six years |
| Florida | LCSW | 1,500 face-to-face psychotherapy | 100 hours | At least 100 weeks |
| Illinois | LCSW | 3,000 | At least 4 hours a month on average | Set by hours |
| Pennsylvania | LCSW | 3,000 | 2 hours per 40 worked | Two to six years |
| Ohio | LISW | 3,000 | 150 hours | 24 months |
| Georgia | LCSW | 3,000 | 120 hours | 36 to 108 months |
| North Carolina | LCSW | 3,000 | 100 hours | Two to six years |
| Massachusetts | LICSW | 3,500 | 100 hours | Two years after the LCSW |
| Minnesota | LICSW | 4,000 to 8,000 | 200 hours | Set by hours |
New York stands apart because it measures time, not hours: three years of full-time supervised experience in diagnosis, psychotherapy and assessment-based treatment planning. Massachusetts stands apart because you must hold its master’s-tier LCSW before the clinical clock starts.

Supervision Hours and Who Can Supervise You
Inside the experience requirement sits a second number: the hours you spend with your supervisor. The most common figure is 100 hours, used by 26 boards. The range runs from 90 hours in New Mexico to 200 hours in Minnesota. Kentucky, North Dakota and Ohio each ask for 150, Georgia for 120 and Iowa for 110.
Boards also cap group supervision. Kentucky allows up to 50 of its 150 hours in groups, North Carolina up to 25 of 100, and Delaware no more than 25 with groups of seven or fewer. Rhode Island requires at least 75 percent of supervision to be individual.
Who supervises you is fixed by rule too. Most boards require a licensed clinical social worker. Some allow other licensed professionals: Iowa accepts an independent social worker, mental health counselor or marriage and family therapist with three years of independent practice, and Alaska accepts a licensed social worker, psychologist or psychiatrist. Hawaii’s supervisor must have at least 4,500 hours of post-master’s clinical experience. Pick your first post-MSW job with this in mind, because a job without an eligible supervisor does not move your clock.
The ASWB Clinical Exam and State Law Exams
46 of the 52 records name the ASWB Clinical exam for the clinical license. It has 122 questions, 110 scored, with a four-hour limit, and ASWB charges US$260. ASWB is clear that each board decides which exams you take, and a few boards add a twist:
- Nevada requires both the ASWB Masters and Clinical exams for its LCSW.
- Ohio lets LISW applicants choose the Clinical or the Advanced Generalist exam.
- Illinois offers an exam alternative for applicants who have attempted the Clinical exam and completed extra supervised experience.
- Ten boards add a law or jurisprudence exam, including California, Texas, Oregon and Wisconsin.
Read the ASWB exam guide for the exam’s structure and how the other levels compare.
Clinical License Titles That Aren’t LCSW
32 jurisdictions call the clinical license the LCSW. The rest use other titles, and some reuse “LCSW” for a lower tier:
- LICSW in eight jurisdictions: Alabama, the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington and West Virginia.
- LISW in Iowa and Ohio, LISW-CP in South Carolina, LSCSW in Kansas and LCSW-C in Maryland.
- LC in Maine and the LMSW with clinical designation in Michigan.
- LIMHP in Nebraska, where clinical social workers license through the mental health practice credentials.
Arkansas and Mississippi call their clinical license the Licensed Certified Social Worker. If you will hold an LMSW license first, the social work license guide explains how each tier fits.
Choosing an MSW for the Clinical Path
This site lists 256 clinical and mental health MSW program options at 207 schools in 46 states. 224 are CSWE accredited and 32 are in candidacy. 129 run online, 130 on campus and 40 hybrid, with 169 offering a part-time plan and 238 an advanced standing track. Estimated tuition (published per-credit rate times credits, before fees) runs from $11,155 to $116,155, with a median of $41,175 across the 187 programs priced.
Use this checklist when you compare them:
- Accreditation first. The compact’s clinical category requires an accredited MSW. A candidacy program counts once accredited if it reached candidacy in or before your start year, says CSWE. Fresno Pacific University (advanced clinical practice) and Pittsburg State University (clinical practice) are both in candidacy.
- A named clinical concentration. Wisconsin asks applicants without a clinical field placement for 1,500 extra hours, so the concentration can save you time. Smith College and Simmons University both list clinical social work; NYU’s hybrid MSW lists clinical social work practice.
- Online with a strong placement plan. CSWE says delivery method does not change quality at an accredited program, and online students carry the same 900-hour field minimum. The University of West Florida’s online MSW offers clinical practice; the University of Illinois iMSW offers Advanced Clinical with mental health and health care focus areas.
- Advanced standing if you have a BSW. The median track is 33 credits against 60, which gets you to the master’s license and the start of your hours sooner. Check eligibility with the advanced standing checker.
- The state you will license in. Your supervised hours count toward that board’s rules, so check its record before you sign a job offer. Rutgers’ Intensive Weekend MSW, with a clinical social work concentration, suits working students heading for New Jersey’s LCSW, which requires two years of full-time supervised clinical practice.
The MSW cost calculator helps you price the options you shortlist.
Clinical Social Worker Pay and Outlook
The BLS occupation closest to clinical practice is mental health and substance abuse social workers. Its national median pay is $60,280, with the top tenth earning $104,170 or more, across 132,810 jobs. Pay runs highest in New York, at a median of $79,380, and California, at $79,000.
Pay is not the main reason to choose a program, but it does argue for finishing the license. The clinical license is what qualifies you to practice without supervision, and the supervised years are the longest stretch of the route.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Long Does It Take to Become an LCSW?
Plan on the MSW plus about two years. The median MSW on this site runs 60 credits, or 33 with advanced standing for BSW holders. Twelve boards then set a 24-month minimum for clinical supervision, and Georgia and New York ask for 36 months.
Can You Become an LCSW Without an MSW?
No. The BLS says clinical social workers need a master's degree, supervised clinical experience and a state license, and the state board records describe the clinical experience as post-master's or postgraduate in state after state. The Social Work Licensure Compact's clinical category also requires an accredited MSW or higher.
Do You Need a License While You Earn Clinical Hours?
In many states, yes. Connecticut counts in-state hours only if earned as an LMSW, Indiana requires the LSW, New Mexico counts hours earned as an LMSW, Wisconsin requires the APSW or ISW, and Maine's hours count while you hold the conditional clinical MC license.
What Is the Difference Between an LCSW and an LICSW?
Usually just the state's name for the clinical license. Eight jurisdictions call it the LICSW, including Massachusetts, Minnesota and Washington. In Massachusetts, Rhode Island and West Virginia, though, an LCSW is a lower tier, so check which letters mean clinical in your state.
How Much Does the ASWB Clinical Exam Cost?
ASWB charges US$260 for the Clinical exam, the same as the Advanced Generalist exam. It has 122 questions, 110 of them scored, and a four-hour time limit. Board application and license fees are separate.
Is There a Way to Get Clinically Licensed Without Passing the Exam?
Illinois has one. Its board accepts an exam alternative: at least one ASWB Clinical attempt since January 1, 2019 plus a separate 3,000 hours of supervised professional experience, which from January 1, 2026 must be completed while licensed as an LSW or school social worker.
