What Is an MSW Degree, and How Do You Pick the Right Program?

An MSW degree (Master of Social Work) is the graduate degree that qualifies you for master's-level and, after supervised practice, clinical social work licenses in the U.S. This site compares 530 MSW program options at 404 schools, each checked on the school's own site in September 2026, with credits, advanced standing, field hours, GRE policy and estimated tuition side by side. Most programs run about 60 credits, and a BSW can cut that to about 33 through advanced standing. Start with the full list of MSW programs or the program matcher.

What an MSW Degree Qualifies You to Do

An MSW degree is the credential state boards look for when they license social workers above the bachelor’s level. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts it plainly: clinical social workers need a master’s degree, supervised clinical experience and a license from the state where they practice. Without the MSW, the clinical track is closed.

The degree also has to come from the right place. CSWE notes that most state and territory rules require licensure candidates to be graduates of a CSWE-accredited program. Of the 530 program options compared here, 480 are accredited, 49 are in candidacy and the rest are in pre-candidacy. That status sits on every program profile, so you can filter it before anything else.

What you get in return is range. BLS tracks four social worker occupations, from child, family and school social work to healthcare and mental health roles, and one MSW qualifies you for all of them. The specialization you choose shapes which one you are ready for first.

How Long a Master of Social Work Takes

The median program is 60 semester credits, and full-time students usually finish in two years. Part-time plans are common: 349 of the 530 options offer one, and they typically stretch the degree to three or four years. Boston University’s online MSW, for example, runs 3 to 4 years part time across 6 to 9 consecutive semesters.

Some schools count in quarter credits, which makes the numbers look bigger than they are. Walden University’s online MSW is 92 quarter credits, and Palo Alto University’s is 88 quarter credits over 8 quarters.

If you hold a BSW, advanced standing is the biggest time saver. The median advanced standing plan is 33 credits, and many finish in a calendar year. The University of North Alabama’s online program runs 12 months, and Syracuse University quotes as little as 10 months full time.

Every MSW also includes supervised field education. The median requirement is 900 hours, usually split into a generalist placement and a specialized one. UNC Charlotte’s online students, for example, spend 16 hours a week in an agency during fall and spring, on top of classes.

What a Masters in Social Work Costs

Estimated tuition (published per-credit rate times credits, before fees) could be worked out for 349 programs. It runs from $11,070 to $138,900, with a median of $40,180. Per-credit rates start at $203 and reach $2,322.

The low end is dominated by public universities and Puerto Rico. The University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras charges $205 per credit for a 54-credit program. Savannah State University’s 60-credit MSW estimates at $12,180 using the in-state rate of $203 per credit. The high end is private: Texas Christian University estimates at $138,900 and NYU at $116,155.

Program Format Credits Estimated tuition CSWE status
University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras MSW Campus 54 $11,070 Accredited
Savannah State University MSW Campus 60 $12,180 (in-state rate) Accredited
Fort Valley State University online MSW Online 54 $12,474 Candidacy
Valdosta State University hybrid MSW Hybrid 60 $16,380 (in-state rate) Accredited
USC online MSW Online 48 $111,456 Accredited
NYU MSW Campus and online 65 $116,155 Accredited
Texas Christian University MSW Campus 60 $138,900 Accredited

Two notes on reading these. Where a school charges residents less, the estimate uses the resident rate, so out-of-state students at Savannah State or Valdosta State pay more. And fees sit on top: Fort Valley State adds a $380 online learning fee for students in all-online classes. Run your own numbers in the MSW cost calculator or read the MSW cost and financial aid guide.

Advanced Standing: The Fastest Route for BSW Graduates

Advanced standing credits your BSW coursework toward the generalist half of the MSW, so you start in the specialized year. It is offered by 474 of the 530 programs, which makes it the norm rather than a perk.

The fine print is where programs differ. Most want a BSW from a CSWE-accredited program, but the time limit and GPA bar vary a lot:

Program Advanced standing credits Length Eligibility in the school’s words
University of Arkansas online advanced standing MSW 32 1 year CSWE-accredited BSW within the past 6 years; 3.0 GPA for the last 60 hours
Appalachian State University advanced standing online 33 1 year full time, 2 years part time CSWE-accredited BSW within the past 7 years; 3.2 GPA in BSW courses
University of Delaware MSW 30 16 months CSWE-accredited BSW within the last ten years
Palo Alto University online MSW 56 quarter units 5 quarters CSWE-accredited social work bachelor’s earned in the last 15 years

If your BSW is older than a school’s window, look at Palo Alto University or the University of Delaware first, or check whether the school accepts relevant work experience. The University of Alaska Anchorage, for instance, admits BSW holders past five years if they work in health and social services. The advanced standing checker tests your degree date and GPA against every program, and the advanced standing MSW list ranks them.

Masters in Social Work Online, Hybrid or on Campus

Online programs make up 261 of the 530 options, campus programs 266 and hybrid programs 88 (a program can be offered in more than one format). CSWE holds all of them to the same accreditation standards regardless of delivery method.

The part that never goes online is field education. The University of Alabama’s primarily online MSW still requires 1,000 hours of in-person practicum. UNC Charlotte’s online MSW sets 464 hours of in-person practicum per academic-year placement. App State’s advanced standing online program pairs a face-to-face practicum with an online seminar. Before you enroll, find out whether the school places you in an agency near home or expects you to find your own site.

Tuition can also differ by format at the same school. The University of Alaska Anchorage charges all admitted online MSW students the resident rate of $549 per credit, which removes the out-of-state penalty entirely. Compare formats in the online MSW programs guide or the part-time MSW list.

CSWE Accreditation, Candidacy and Why It Matters

Accreditation is the one factor you cannot trade away. CSWE’s Board of Accreditation is recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation, and state licensing rules lean on its decisions.

Candidacy is a halfway point. CSWE describes it as typically a three-year process that does not guarantee initial accreditation. If you enter a program that has reached candidacy by the academic year you start, you are retroactively treated as a graduate of an accredited program, provided the program earns initial accreditation. Pre-candidacy programs have not reached that point yet.

Some candidacy programs are among the most affordable options. Fort Valley State University’s online MSW estimates at $12,474, and Eastern Oregon University’s online MSW at $35,588 for 62 credits. The trade-off is risk you would not carry at an accredited program. The CSWE-accredited MSW programs list shows only fully accredited options.

What You Study in an MSW Program

CSWE’s 2022 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) set generalist practice competencies for the first half of the degree and specialized practice competencies for the second. The specialized half is where programs split.

By specialization area, 256 programs offer a mental health or clinical focus, 142 a macro, policy or leadership track, 112 child and family practice, 67 health care, 39 school social work, 35 aging, 29 substance use and 14 military social work. The names schools use are specific. Aurora University lists tracks in Addictions, Child Welfare, Forensics, Gerontology and Military and Veteran Social Work. Boston University offers Clinical Practice, Macro Practice and Trauma, Violence & Justice. CUNY Hunter College splits into Clinical Practice with Individuals, Families, and Groups and Community Organizing, Planning and Development.

Many programs offer a single “advanced generalist” concentration instead. Valdosta State University and the University of Maine both use that model, and Missouri Western State University frames its focus as rural practice. The MSW specializations guide compares every track, and the clinical MSW programs list covers the most popular one.

From MSW to License: What State Boards Require

Licensure happens state by state. Of the 52 jurisdictions whose board rules are on file here, 10 issue a master’s-level license without an ASWB exam.

The clinical license takes longer. Across the 38 boards that set an hour count, required supervised clinical experience ranges from 1,500 to 4,000 hours, with a median of 3,000. Alaska, for example, requires 3,000 hours over at least two years with at least 100 hours of direct supervision.

ASWB’s exams have 122 questions each, 110 of them scored, with a 4-hour limit. Registration costs US$230 for the Masters exam and US$260 for the Clinical exam.

Moving later may get easier. The Social Work Licensure Compact’s site lists 33 jurisdictions that have passed the compact as of September 2026, but multistate licenses are not yet being issued. Map your own route with the license pathway tool, or read how to become an LCSW and the ASWB exam guide.

What Can You Do With an MSW

BLS describes the work simply: social workers help individuals, groups and families prevent and cope with problems in their everyday lives, in child welfare and human service agencies, healthcare providers and schools. It tracks four social worker occupations, and the May 2025 data shows how pay differs by setting:

Occupation Employed Median pay
Child, family and school social workers 392,550 $59,550
Healthcare social workers 187,630 $67,880
Mental health and substance abuse social workers 132,810 $60,280
Social workers, all other 62,930 $71,900

Location moves pay as much as setting. Healthcare social workers in California have a median of $89,660, and mental health social workers in New York $79,380. The careers guide walks through each path and the license it needs.

How to Choose an MSW Program

Work through these in order. Each one rules out programs faster than the last:

  • Accreditation first. Pick an accredited program unless you accept candidacy risk knowingly. 480 of the 530 options are fully accredited.
  • Advanced standing if you have a BSW. Check the school’s time limit on your degree: many use five to seven years, the University of Delaware ten and Palo Alto University fifteen.
  • Specialization second. If you want clinical licensure, a clinical or advanced generalist track with clinical coursework fits. For policy work, a macro track like Rutgers University’s Management and Policy option fits better.
  • Field placement logistics. Ask how the school places online students. The programs above ask for 900 to 1,200 hours, and they happen in person.
  • Real cost, resident rate included. Compare estimated tuition against your residency. Rutgers charges New Jersey residents $906 per credit part time and non-residents $1,556.
  • Tests. 151 programs say no GRE is required and 22 more waive it. Only 7 require a test.

Then compare your shortlist in the program matcher, or browse by state, starting with New York, California or Puerto Rico.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Master of Social Work Worth It if You Already Have a BSW?

Usually the math is strongest for BSW holders, because 474 of the 530 programs offer advanced standing. The median advanced standing plan is 33 credits instead of 60, and at Savannah State University the estimated advanced standing tuition is $6,699 against $12,180 for the full 60-credit program.

Do You Need a Social Work Bachelor's to Apply for an MSW?

No. The traditional MSW, usually around 60 credits, is built for applicants with any bachelor's degree. A BSW matters only for advanced standing, which most schools limit to BSWs from CSWE-accredited programs earned within a set window, often five to seven years.

Can You Become an LCSW With an Online MSW?

Yes, if the program is CSWE-accredited or reaches accreditation under CSWE's candidacy rules. CSWE applies the same accreditation standards regardless of delivery method. The clinical license then requires supervised experience, which ranges from 1,500 to 4,000 hours across the boards on file.

How Much Does the ASWB Exam Cost?

ASWB lists a registration fee of US$230 for the Associate, Bachelors or Masters exam and US$260 for the Advanced Generalist or Clinical exam. Each exam has 122 questions, 110 of them scored, with a 4-hour time limit.

Are MSW Programs in Candidacy a Safe Choice?

They carry a known risk. CSWE says students who enter a program that has reached candidacy by their first academic year are retroactively treated as graduates of an accredited program, but only if the program earns initial accreditation, and candidacy does not guarantee it. Of the 530 programs here, 49 are in candidacy.

How Many Field Hours Does an MSW Require?

The median across programs is 900 hours. Some schools go higher: the University of Alabama requires 1,000 hours of in-person practicum, East Carolina University 1,032 and USC 1,200. Advanced standing students usually complete only the specialized placement, often about 500 hours.
