School Social Work MSW Programs

Which MSW Programs Prepare You to Become a School Social Worker?

The path to becoming a school social worker runs through the MSW: 39 program options at 34 schools in 15 states offer a school social work specialization, track or certificate. Estimated tuition runs from $23,040 at Chicago State University to $111,456 at USC's campus and hybrid MSW. States also certify school social workers through their education departments; California's Pupil Personnel Services credential, for example, requires 45 semester units in a commission-approved school social work program.

What a School Social Worker Does

A school social worker is the person in a school building who connects what happens at home with what happens in class. The BLS describes the job as working with teachers, parents and school administrators on plans to improve students’ academic performance and social development, helping students with problems such as aggressive behavior or bullying, and meeting families about access to special education resources or frequent absences.

The broader social work duties apply too: assessing a student’s needs, strengths and support network, responding to crises such as suspected child abuse or a mental health emergency, following up, and keeping case records. BLS also notes that school social workers may be assigned to several schools and travel around the district to see students, so a single job can mean three or four buildings.

The training for that work is an MSW with a school focus. Schools label it very differently: “School Social Work (PPS)” at Fresno State, “Pre-K-12 School Social Work” at Colorado State, “School and Educational Settings” at USC, “Social Work in Schools” at Touro, or a “School Social Work Certificate” at the University of Kentucky. Every one of those leads to the same degree, the MSW, with school-based coursework and a school field placement on top.

Who the School Social Work Track Suits

This track fits you if you want to work with children and teenagers inside the education system rather than in child welfare or a clinic. It suits former teachers, paraprofessionals and school counselors-in-training who already know how a school runs, and BSW graduates who want the shortest route: 37 of the 39 options offer advanced standing.

It fits less well if you are unsure where you want to practice. School credentials are state-specific, and some tracks are tied to one state’s license. Loyola University Chicago’s online School Social Work/PEL track, for example, is open to Illinois residents only. If you might move, a broader child and family concentration can keep more doors open; compare the child and family MSW programs before you commit.

School Social Work Programs by the Numbers

The 39 options span 34 schools in 15 states. 37 hold full CSWE accreditation and 2 are in candidacy. The set leans toward flexible study: 20 run online, 26 on campus and 3 hybrid, and 30 offer a part-time plan.

The typical program is 60 credits, or 30 with advanced standing, with a median of 900 field hours. Among the 28 with a published per-credit rate, prices run from $384 at Chicago State to $2,322 at USC, with $670 in the middle. Across the 27 with an estimated tuition (published per-credit rate times credits, before fees), the median is $40,300. 18 programs state outright that they don’t require the GRE.

All 39 School Social Work MSW Programs

39 programs

Program facts come from each school's own pages, reviewed September 2026. Estimated tuition is the published per-credit rate times the stated credits, before fees, or the school's published program total; "resident rate" means the school charges nonresidents more. CSWE status comes from CSWE's directory of accredited programs.

How School Social Work MSW Programs Compare on Cost

Price spreads widely here: the public universities in Illinois and Kansas sit at the low end and private schools hold four of the five highest estimates. The table lists estimated tuition (published per-credit rate times credits, before fees) at the resident rate where the school sets one, plus the advanced standing estimate.

Program Format Credits Estimated tuition Advanced standing estimate
Chicago State University MSW Campus 60 $23,040 $12,672
Governors State University MSW Campus 60 $25,260 $13,472
University of Illinois iMSW Online 44 $27,412 $19,936
Washburn University MSW Campus, hybrid 63 $32,886 $17,226
Campbellsville University online MSW Online 60 $38,400 $19,200

DePaul University MSW Campus 88 quarter credits $72,864
USC MSW Campus, hybrid 48 $111,456 $55,728

A few details change the math. Chicago State’s $384 is the Illinois resident rate, and it adds $121 per credit hour in mandatory fees. Kentucky charges the in-state rate to every online student, so its $47,400 applies wherever you live. Metropolitan State University of Denver publishes a program total instead of a rate: $36,327 for Colorado residents in the regular program and $22,016.58 with advanced standing.

At the private end, Touro University’s estimate is $60,450 for 65 credits and the University of New England’s online MSW is $60,600. Candidacy programs can price low: Mount Vernon Nazarene University lists an estimated $35,030 online. To model your own total with fees and living costs, use the MSW cost calculator.

What You Study in a School Social Work Concentration

Every CSWE-accredited MSW follows the Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS). The master’s program builds specialized practice on top of generalist practice and nine social work competencies. In a school track, the specialized half is where you learn to work inside a school system.

Look at how each program frames that half, because the names reveal the scope:

  • Credential-linked tracks: “School Social Work (PPS)” at Fresno State points to California’s Pupil Personnel Services credential, and “School Social Work Practice (Professional Educator License/PEL)” at Governors State points to Illinois’s license.
  • Age-banded tracks: Colorado State’s “Pre-K-12 School Social Work” and Palo Alto University’s “Practice with Children and Youth in School and Community Settings (CY)” track.
  • Focus areas inside a clinical concentration: the University of Illinois folds School Social Work into its “Advanced Clinical” concentration alongside Mental Health, Health Care, and Children, Youth and Family Services.
  • Add-on options: Kentucky’s “School Social Work Certificate” and Lewis University’s “School social work field option” sit on top of a broader MSW.

California’s credential rules show why the label matters. The school social work authorization there covers assessing home, school, personal and community factors that affect learning; counseling, case management and crisis intervention; consulting with teachers; and coordinating family, school and community resources.

Field Placements in Schools

Field education is what makes a school track real. CSWE calls it social work’s signature pedagogy and requires at least 900 hours in a master’s program. The school track decides where some of those hours happen, and several programs spell out a school-specific minimum.

Program Field hours in the school track
University of Illinois campus MSW 900 minimum; 500 for advanced standing, 600 in the school focus area
Chicago State University MSW 600 clock hours in the school placement
Illinois State University MSW 400-hour generalist practicum plus a specialist practicum of at least 700 hours
University of Illinois Chicago MSW 450 generalist hours plus 630 specialization hours
Dominican University MSW 1,080 hours; 600 for advanced standing
USC MSW 1,200 hours of practicum training

Several programs describe placements that run across the academic year. Governors State describes 14 hours a week at the generalist level and 16 to 20 at the specialized level; the University of Louisville averages 16 to 18 hours a week across two year-long placements.

Credentials and Licensure for School Social Workers

School social work usually involves two separate credentials, issued by two separate agencies.

  • The school credential: states certify school social workers through their education departments, not the social work board. In California it is the Pupil Personnel Services credential in school social work, issued by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing on the recommendation of a California university with an approved program. In Illinois, programs such as Governors State and Loyola Chicago build their tracks around the Professional Educator License (PEL).
  • The social work license: the state board licenses social workers. CSWE notes that most states and territories require licensure candidates to be graduates of a CSWE-accredited program, which is one reason to favor the 37 accredited options over the 2 in candidacy.

The ASWB exam you take depends on the license your board issues: ASWB offers Bachelors, Masters, Advanced Generalist and Clinical exams. See the social work license guide and LMSW license guide, or map your state’s steps with the license pathway tool. Illinois and California readers can compare programs and board rules on the Illinois and California state pages.

School Social Worker Pay and Jobs

BLS groups school social workers with child and family social workers. That occupation had 392,550 jobs and a median wage of $59,550 in May 2025; the middle half earned between $48,270 and $76,070, and the top 10% earned more than $95,530.

Pay tracks the state. The median was $63,220 in Illinois, $65,200 in California, $63,720 in Colorado and $59,100 in Kentucky. Educational services employ 10% of all social workers, per BLS. For the full range of roles, see social work careers.

How to Choose a School Social Work Program

Use this checklist against the programs above:

  • Match the credential to your state. Fresno State’s track names California’s PPS credential; Governors State and Loyola Chicago name Illinois’s PEL. If a program’s track points to another state’s credential, confirm it transfers before you enroll.
  • Confirm the school placement is guaranteed. Chicago State sets 600 clock hours in a school placement. A general “900 hours” doesn’t tell you any of them happen in a school.
  • Check advanced standing inside the track. Illinois State allows school social work students only the two-year advanced standing plan; its other tracks offer a one-year plan.
  • Check residency limits on online tracks. Loyola’s online PEL track is for Illinois residents only.
  • Compare the resident rate to your rate. Oakland’s $60,896 is the in-state figure; Kentucky’s online rate is the same for everyone.
  • Check the schedule. Colorado State’s campus MSW is full time only, while 30 of the 39 options offer a part-time plan.

If you hold a BSW, run your transcript through the advanced standing checker, or narrow the list by state and budget with the program matcher.

Trade-Offs Before You Apply

Online vs campus. Online coursework is common in this set, but a school placement needs a school near you, and online programs still arrange that placement locally. Online options such as the University of St Francis MSW at $40,300 follow that model.

Advanced standing vs traditional. Advanced standing cuts cost sharply: Governors State drops from $25,260 to $13,472. But it also shortens your time in a school placement, and Illinois State keeps its school social work students on a two-year advanced standing plan. See all advanced standing MSW programs.

School track vs broad concentration. A named school track matches one state’s credential closely. A broader focus, such as Illinois’s Advanced Clinical concentration with a school focus area, gives you clinical depth for a later license. Browse every concentration in the MSW specializations guide, or compare formats on the online MSW programs page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do You Need an MSW to Be a School Social Worker?

The school credential is set by each state's education department, so the degree rule depends on the state. California's Pupil Personnel Services credential in school social work asks for 45 semester units of post-baccalaureate study in a commission-approved school social work program, including a practicum with school-aged children.

Can You Train for School Social Work Online?

Yes. 20 of the 39 options run online, including the University of Illinois iMSW at an estimated $27,412 and Aurora University at $39,000. The school placement itself still happens in person, in a school near you.

Is Advanced Standing Allowed in the School Track?

Usually. 37 of the 39 options offer advanced standing, with a median of 30 credits. Check the track itself: Illinois State University limits school social work students in advanced standing to its two-year plan.

What Does a School Social Worker Earn?

Child, family, and school social workers earned a median of $59,550 in May 2025, per BLS, with the top 10% above $95,530. The Illinois median was $63,220 and California's was $65,200.

What Is the Illinois PEL Track?

Several Illinois programs name their school track after the Professional Educator License (PEL): Governors State's School Social Work Practice (PEL) and Loyola Chicago's School Social Work/PEL track, which the online version limits to Illinois residents.

Which ASWB Exam Do School Social Workers Take?

That depends on the license your state board issues after the MSW. ASWB offers Bachelors, Masters, Advanced Generalist and Clinical exams; each has 122 questions and a 4-hour limit, and the Masters exam costs US$230.
