What Does a Substance Abuse Social Worker Do?

A substance abuse social worker helps people whose drinking or drug use is running their lives, and often the families around them. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook groups this work with mental health: these social workers help clients with mental illnesses or addictions and connect them with services such as support groups and 12-step programs. Those who hold a clinical license can also diagnose and treat behavioral and emotional problems and run individual, group and family therapy.

The MSW is where that clinical path starts. Schools don’t offer a separate addictions degree. You earn a Master of Social Work and choose a concentration, focus area or certificate built around substance use. The names vary: Fort Valley State University calls it Alcohol and Drug Addiction Counseling, the University of Pikeville calls it Clinical Mental Health and Addictions, and Eastern Kentucky University calls it Addictions Intervention.

Most of these programs pair addictions with mental health. Of the 29 programs here, 25 also carry a mental health tag, which matches how treatment works: many clients bring both.

Who a Substance Use MSW Suits

This option fits you if you want to do therapy or case management in treatment settings and eventually hold a clinical license. It also suits people already working in recovery services who want the degree that opens supervisory and clinical roles.

It suits BSW graduates especially well. 27 of the 29 programs offer advanced standing, and the median advanced standing plan is 30 credits, half the median full program of 60.

If you want flexibility, the set leans online: 17 programs run online, 11 on campus and 5 hybrid (some offer more than one format). 14 list a part-time plan. If you’re sure you want addictions work but less sure about the rest of your career, a broad clinical concentration with an addictions elective is a sound hedge; see the clinical and mental health MSW programs for that wider set.

Substance Use MSW Programs by the Numbers

The spread in price is wide. Among the 26 programs where a per-credit rate and credit count give an estimated tuition (published per-credit rate times credits, before fees), the low is $12,474, the median is $40,020 and the high is $87,540. The median lands on Morgan State University’s online MSW, which lists the program at $40,000 ($667 per credit) with Urban Children, Youth, and Families and Addictions as its specializations.

Per-credit rates run from $231 to $1,459, with a median of $667. Private schools sit at both ends: Augustana University in Sioux Falls estimates to $28,910, while Long Island University estimates to $86,100 and Tulane to $87,540.

On admissions, 13 of the 29 say outright that no GRE is needed, and none lists the GRE as a requirement. 23 programs are CSWE-accredited and 6 are in candidacy or pre-candidacy, a split that matters for licensure and is covered below.

29 programs

Program facts come from each school's own pages, reviewed September 2026. Estimated tuition is the published per-credit rate times the stated credits, before fees, or the school's published program total; "resident rate" means the school charges nonresidents more. CSWE status comes from CSWE's directory of accredited programs.

Most Affordable and Highest-Cost Substance Use MSWs Compared

Kentucky and Indiana dominate the affordable end: of the 15 lowest estimates, five are Kentucky programs and three are in Indiana. The table sets the lowest estimates against the highest. Figures are estimated tuition before fees; where a school splits resident and nonresident pricing, the figure uses the resident rate.

Program Format Credits Estimated tuition Addictions offering CSWE status
Fort Valley State University online MSW (GA) Online 54 $12,474 Alcohol and Drug Addiction Counseling Candidacy
Ball State University MSW, Muncie and Fishers (IN) Hybrid 57 $26,448 (resident) Advanced generalist with addictions coursework Accredited

Long Island University MSW, Brooklyn and Post (NY) On campus 60 $86,100 Substance Use and Addiction Accredited
Tulane University online MSW (LA) Online 60 $87,540 Mental Health, Addiction, and the Family Accredited

Two notes on reading the low end. Fort Valley State adds a $380 online learning fee for students in all-online classes. Ball State’s nonresident rates are $1,269 per credit on the main campus or $696 for off-campus and online courses, so an out-of-state student pays well above the table figure. Use the MSW cost calculator to rerun any program at your own credit load.

What You Study in an Addictions Concentration

CSWE’s 2022 accreditation standards (EPAS) require every accredited MSW to teach generalist practice first, then at least one area of specialized practice that extends nine social work competencies across client populations, problem areas and methods of intervention. Substance use is one of those problem areas, and schools package it in three ways.

A full concentration. Your second year’s advanced courses and field placement both center on addictions. Examples: Alcohol and Drug Addiction Counseling at Fort Valley State, Substance Use Disorders at Morehead State, Substance Use and Addiction at Long Island University, and Addictions at Walden University’s online MSW, the largest program in this set with 1,060 MSWs awarded in 2022-23.

A paired focus. Many schools join addictions to mental health or family work: Clinical Mental Health & Addictions at Northwest Nazarene University, Mental Health and Addictions at the University of Indianapolis hybrid immersion MSW, and Mental Health, Addiction, and the Family at Tulane.

An optional certificate or emphasis. You keep a broader concentration and add addictions on top. The University of Kentucky online MSW offers a Substance Use Disorder Certificate among seven certificates. St Catherine University in Saint Paul offers Addiction and Recovery Counseling as an optional specialization, and Saint Mary’s College offers an optional emphasis in aging and addictions.

Campbellsville University goes furthest in mixing: its online MSW lists Clinical/Substance Use Disorder and Substance Use Disorder/Faith as combined tracks. Indiana Wesleyan’s page names optional dual licensure in social work and addictions, worth a look if you live in Indiana and want both credentials.

Field Hours: Where the Addictions Work Happens

Field education is where you actually learn to run a group or do an intake assessment. CSWE sets a floor of 900 hours for master’s programs, and the median in this set is exactly that. Some schools go further or structure the hours around addictions:

  • Aurora University’s online MSW raises its generalist internship from 450 to 500 hours in the addictions track, followed by a specialist internship of at least 600 hours.
  • The University of Indianapolis lists 930 hours for regular standing and 620 for advanced standing.
  • Nazareth University in Rochester splits its 900 hours across two practicum experiences; advanced standing students do one 500-hour practicum.
  • Tulane’s campus program spreads a minimum of 900 hours across three semesters at 300 hours each.

For an addictions focus, the question that matters is whether your specialization-year placement can be in a treatment program. Online students place near home, so check that the school places students in your state before you apply.

Advanced Standing: The Fastest Route if You Hold a BSW

CSWE’s standards say accredited MSW programs offer advanced standing to graduates of CSWE-accredited BSW programs, so you don’t repeat generalist content. In this set, 27 of 29 programs do. Eligibility rules differ, and the time limit on your BSW is often the deciding detail.

Program Advanced standing credits Length Estimated tuition BSW rule in the school’s words
Fort Valley State University online 30 credit hours 1 year $6,930 BSW from a CSWE-accredited institution
Ball State University 36 credits 1 year full time or 2 years part time $16,704 No limit on how long ago the BSW was earned
Campbellsville University online 30-39 credit hours As little as nine months $19,200 3.0 overall GPA
Eastern Kentucky University online MSW 30 credit hours As little as 12 months $20,700 Graduated within 5 years of entry; 3.0 GPA
University of Kentucky online 30 credits 12 months full time $23,700 Within the past seven years; 3.0 overall and 3.5 social work GPA
University of Delaware advanced standing MSW 30 credits 16 months (3 semesters) $27,240 Within the last ten years; fall admission
Tulane University online 45 credit hours 12 months full time or 24 months part time $65,655 Within the last five years; 3.3 GPA in social work courses

Ball State stands out if your BSW is old: it sets no limit on when you earned it. The advanced standing checker tests your own degree date and GPA against every program’s rules, and the full set is on the advanced standing MSW programs page.

From MSW to License

Licensing is state law, and ASWB notes that most states offer several license categories with requirements that vary by state. The path for a clinical addictions career usually runs like this:

  1. Graduate from a CSWE-accredited MSW. CSWE says most state and territory licensing rules require a degree from an accredited program to sit for the exam.
  2. Apply to your state board for a master’s-level license and pass the ASWB exam it names, usually the Masters exam (US$230).
  3. Complete the supervised practice your state sets for a clinical or independent license.
  4. Pass the ASWB Clinical exam (US$260). Each ASWB exam has 122 questions and a 4-hour limit.

Your state’s hours, tiers and exam order are on its board’s rules; the license pathway tool and the LCSW requirements guide lay them out state by state, and the ASWB exam guide covers each exam. If you hold an addictions certificate from your MSW, it doesn’t replace any of these steps.

What Substance Use Social Workers Earn

BLS counts 132,810 mental health and substance abuse social workers (May 2025), with a national median wage of $60,280. The middle of the range is wide: the 10th percentile earns $39,740 and the 90th percentile $104,170.

Where you work moves the number a lot. The New York median is $79,380, while Kentucky, home to five of the most affordable programs here, sits at $42,570, and Indiana at $48,300. If you plan to stay where you study, check your state page, such as Kentucky or Indiana, for local programs and license rules. More on settings and pay is on the social work careers guide.

How to Choose a Substance Use MSW

Use this checklist against the programs above:

  • Accreditation status. 23 are CSWE-accredited. Fort Valley State, Augustana, Penn State World Campus, the University of Delaware and the University of the District of Columbia are in candidacy, and Morehead State is in pre-candidacy.
  • How deep the addictions content goes. A full concentration (Long Island University, Walden) gives you a specialization-year placement in the area; a certificate (University of Kentucky) or optional focus (Tulane) adds coursework to a broader track.
  • Price at your residency. Ball State’s table figure is the Indiana resident rate. The University of Kentucky charges the in-state rate to all online students.
  • Pace. Morgan State’s online MSW is full time only, over 2 years. The University of New England’s online program runs 3 to 4 years with acceleration options.
  • Your BSW’s age. Advanced standing windows run from five years (Eastern Kentucky, Tulane) to ten (University of Delaware) to no limit (Ball State).
  • Field placement in treatment settings. Aurora’s addictions track builds in extra generalist hours, and online programs place you near home, so confirm the school places students in your state.

For a broader comparison of concentrations, see MSW specializations, and to filter every program by format, price and advanced standing, try the program matcher.

Trade-Offs to Weigh

Online vs campus. Online programs dominate this set and include the most affordable one, but the field placement is still in person. If you live somewhere with few treatment agencies, a campus program with established placements may serve you better than a lower sticker price.

Candidacy vs accredited. Six programs here aren’t yet fully accredited. CSWE ties licensure eligibility to graduating from an accredited program, so a candidacy program’s timeline toward accreditation matters to you directly. Fort Valley State and Augustana are the most affordable options on price, and both are in candidacy.

Concentration vs broad clinical. A named addictions concentration signals intent to employers and shapes your placement. A general clinical concentration keeps more doors open. The University of Utah’s campus MSW, with 273 MSWs awarded in 2022-23, lets you choose Substance Use in Social Work among seven specializations, which suits you if you want addictions content without narrowing the whole degree.

Full time vs part time. 14 programs list part-time plans. Tulane’s online MSW takes as few as 16 months full time or 32 months part time, and Nazareth’s standard program runs 2 years full time or 3 to 4 years part time. Part time costs the same per credit but keeps a paycheck coming during field hours, which are often unpaid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do You Need an MSW to Work in Addiction Treatment?

Not for every role, but the clinical path runs through the MSW. BLS says clinical social workers need a master's degree, supervised clinical experience and a state license, and a BSW is the most common requirement for entry-level nonclinical jobs.

What Is the Most Affordable Substance Use MSW?

By estimated tuition, Fort Valley State University's online MSW at $12,474 (its $231 per-credit online graduate rate times 54 credits, plus a $380 online learning fee). Ball State University is next at $26,448 at the Indiana resident rate.

Can You Study Addictions in an Online MSW?

Yes. 17 of the 29 programs in this set run online, including Walden University, Tulane University, the University of Kentucky and Eastern Kentucky University. The field placement still happens in person at an agency near you.

How Many Field Hours Does an Addictions MSW Require?

The median in this set is 900 hours, which is also CSWE's minimum for master's programs. Aurora University asks for 500 generalist hours in its addictions track instead of 450, and the University of Indianapolis lists 930.

Is a Substance Use Certificate the Same as a Concentration?

No. The University of Kentucky's online MSW, for example, offers a Substance Use Disorder Certificate alongside its core MSW, while Campbellsville University builds Substance Use Disorder into its concentration choices, including a combined Clinical/Substance Use Disorder track.

Which Exam Do Substance Use Social Workers Take?

The ASWB exam your state requires for the license you want: Masters for most master's-level licenses and Clinical for the independent clinical license. Each has 122 questions and a 4-hour limit, and the Clinical exam costs US$260.
