What an Accelerated MSW Program Is

An accelerated MSW covers the same curriculum as a traditional two-year MSW on a tighter calendar. Instead of four semesters with summers off, you study year-round, take heavier course loads or move through shorter terms. The credit total usually does not change: the median accelerated program here still requires 60 credits.

There are two kinds of accelerated track, and it pays to know which one you are looking at:

• Accelerated full programs for students without a BSW. These usually run about 16 months. Tulane, NYU, Touro, Simmons, Sacred Heart and the University of the Pacific all publish 16-month options.
• Accelerated advanced standing for BSW graduates. These skip the generalist year and run 8 to 12 months full time.

Every one of the 19 accelerated options on this site is CSWE-accredited, so the faster route leads to the same degree and the same license eligibility as the slower one.

Who an Accelerated MSW Suits

An accelerated program fits you if finishing sooner is worth more than keeping your current income. Typical fits:

• Career changers who have already left a job, or can, and want to start licensed practice quickly.
• Recent BSW graduates who can move straight into a one-year or shorter advanced standing track. Many programs require a recent BSW: Howard wants it earned within four years of the start date, and Tulane and NYU within five.
• Students who learn well under pressure. Seven-week terms, like those at Northern Kentucky University, mean a new course every couple of months.

It fits less well if you need to keep a full-time job. Accelerated tracks are usually full time, and field placements add many hours of agency work on top of classes.

Accelerated MSW Programs by the Numbers

The 19 accelerated options sit at 17 schools in 14 states. Sixteen are offered online, seven on campus and one in a hybrid format, with some schools offering more than one. Fifteen also publish a part-time route, so you can switch pace if the accelerated load becomes too much.

• Credits: the median is 60 for a full program and 32 for advanced standing.
• Field hours: the median is 900, the CSWE minimum.
• Per-credit rates: from $455 at Delaware State University to $1,787 per point at NYU, with a median of $930.
• Control: four of the options are at public universities (Delaware State, Illinois, Northern Kentucky and VCU). The rest are private, and the group’s median estimated tuition of $54,615 sits above the $40,180 median for all MSW options.

How Fast Can You Finish an MSW Without a BSW?

These are the published full-program timelines. Estimated tuition is the per-credit rate times credits, before fees; where a school lists resident and nonresident rates, the figure uses the resident rate.

Two programs without an estimate also publish 16-month full-time plans: Howard University’s online Starship MSW (four terms) and Fordham University’s online MSW. The University of Pikeville online MSW lists an accelerated schedule of “less than a year” alongside two- and three-year plans, at an estimated $33,000.

The Fastest Route: Accelerated Advanced Standing

If you have a BSW from a CSWE-accredited program, advanced standing is the quickest MSW there is. CSWE allows it only for accredited BSW graduates (or degrees it recognizes through its international evaluation service or agreement with Canada’s accreditor). Each school then adds its own rules.

What Accelerated MSW Programs Cost

Finishing faster does not mean paying less tuition. You still pay for the same credits, only over fewer terms, so each semester’s bill is larger. Across the 16 options with an estimate, the median is $54,615, which happens to be the University of the Pacific’s online MSW.

The spread is wide. Delaware State, at $455 per credit, comes in at $27,300 for 60 credits. The University of Pikeville ($33,000), Grand View University ($36,285, with an accelerated three-term schedule) and VCU ($38,040 at the in-state rate, plus a $100 per-credit online fee) round out the lower end. At the top, Tulane’s two MSWs each come to $87,540 and NYU’s to $116,155.

Where the savings come from is time. A shorter program means fewer months out of full-time work and an earlier start on post-degree supervision. Weigh that against a heavier course load. Field Hours Don’t Shrink When the Calendar Does

CSWE requires at least 900 field hours for an MSW, and accelerated programs have to fit them into fewer months. Some ask for more than the minimum:

• University of the Pacific online MSW: 1,104 practicum hours, or 744 for advanced standing.
• Sacred Heart University: 1,000 practicum hours on the 60-credit track, or 500 for advanced standing.
• Tulane University, on campus: 900 hours, split into 300 hours over each of three semesters.
• NYU: 900 hours in two 450-hour placements, or 450 for advanced standing.

Spread over 16 months, 900 hours is a heavy weekly load next to full-time classes. This is the main reason accelerated tracks rarely work alongside a full-time job. CSWE’s standards do allow paid and employment-based placements, so ask whether a program can place you at your current employer.

Online and Campus Accelerated Options

Sixteen of the 19 accelerated options are offered online, which matters because the fastest programs are concentrated at a handful of private universities. Online delivery lets you take Tulane’s or the University of the Pacific’s 16-month track without moving to New Orleans or Sacramento.

CSWE holds online and campus programs to the same standards. The practical differences are scheduling and placement:

• Campus programs such as the University of Illinois’s 16- to 18-month MSW keep you near the school’s own field network.
• Online programs place you at an agency where you live, so ask how they find placements in your area.
• Hybrid formats such as the University of the Pacific’s Sacramento hybrid MSW, a 16-month program estimated at $57,475, mix the two.

What You Study in an Accelerated MSW

The curriculum matches a traditional MSW: a generalist foundation, then a specialization. Among the 19 accelerated options, 15 list a mental health focus, 6 health care, and 5 each in child and family, macro and substance use practice.

How to Choose an Accelerated MSW Program

• Decide whether you qualify for advanced standing. It turns a 16-month program into an 8- to 12-month one. Check the BSW age limit, which ranges from four years at Howard to ten at Grand View.
• Confirm the accelerated track is full time. Plan your finances around little or no work income for the length of the program.
• Ask how field hours are scheduled. Programs requiring 1,000 or more hours, like Sacred Heart and Pacific, add the most weekly load.
• Compare the semester bill, not just the total. Fewer terms mean bigger payments each term.
• Check the start date. NYU’s 16-month track starts in spring; Simmons’ advanced standing runs September to May.
• Keep a slower option in reserve. Fifteen of the 19 options also offer part-time study if you need to change pace.

The degree is only the first step to a clinical license.
