Social Work License Pathway Planner

What Are the Steps From an MSW to a Social Work License in Your State?

Every state licenses social workers through its own board, with its own license titles, exams and supervised experience rules. Pick your state and your goal and the planner lays out the steps from the board's own requirements, with a realistic timeline and the MSW programs in your state.

Your Timeline

–

Timeline estimates: MSW 2 years full time (1 with advanced standing; about 1.5 times longer part time) plus the board's stated supervised experience. Your own pace will differ.

    How the Planner Works

For each state, the planner reads the license tiers from the state's social work board, checked in September 2026: each license's title, the degree it requires, the ASWB exam, the supervised experience for clinical licensure in the board's words and whether the license allows independent practice. The timeline adds a typical MSW length to the board's stated experience period; where a board states hours but no minimum period, the planner assumes about two years of full-time practice.

Read the full rules for your state on its page (MSW programs and licensing by state), and see how the tiers compare nationally in social work license requirements and how to become an LCSW.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Difference Between the LMSW and the LCSW?

The master's-level license (often LMSW) lets you practice social work after your MSW, usually under supervision or in an agency. The clinical license (often LCSW) adds independent clinical practice: diagnosing, treating and billing insurance on your own, and it requires years of supervised clinical experience and the ASWB Clinical exam.

How Long Does It Take to Become an LCSW?

Plan on the MSW (about two years, or one with advanced standing) plus the supervised experience your board requires, which runs from 1,500 to 4,000 hours in the states that state an hour figure, typically over at least two years. The planner shows your state's figures from its board.

Can You Use Your License in Another State?

Not automatically. You apply for licensure in each state, often by endorsement. The Social Work Licensure Compact will let licensed social workers in member states practice in other member states once privileges are issued; the planner shows your state's membership.

Where Do the Requirements Come From?

From each state's social work licensing board or its administrative code, checked in September 2026, with the link to the board's own page. Boards change their rules, so confirm with the board before you plan your hours.
