Admissions
MSW Admission Requirements: Degree, GPA, GRE and What Schools Ask for
What Are the Requirements for a Master's in Social Work?
The requirements for a masters in social work start with one fixed rule: every CSWE-accredited MSW program must require an earned bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college, in any major. Beyond that, schools set their own bar. Of 530 verified MSW options, 151 say no GRE is needed and 22 let you waive it, while 474 offer advanced standing to BSW graduates, usually with a GPA floor and a limit on how old the BSW can be.

MSW admission is less about a single cutoff and more about which track you qualify for. A bachelor’s degree in any subject gets you into the traditional program. A recent BSW with good grades can get you into advanced standing, which roughly halves the credits. The details below come from the admissions and curriculum pages of 530 MSW options at 404 schools, checked in September 2026.
The One Requirement Every MSW Program Shares
CSWE’s 2022 accreditation standards set one admission rule for every accredited master’s program: you must hold an earned baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Everything else, including GPA floors, test policy, references and essays, is left to the school.
Your major does not have to be social work. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that a BSW is not required for MSW admission and that psychology, public policy and social science majors are common. What your major changes is the length of the degree, not whether you can apply.
Two things cannot stand in for the bachelor’s:
- An associate degree in social work. It can feed into a bachelor’s, but it does not meet the master’s admission rule on its own.
- Work experience. CSWE bars programs from granting social work course credit for life or work experience. Years in a case management job may strengthen your application, but they will not shorten the curriculum.
Requirements for Masters in Social Work Programs, Compared
Here is how the published requirements differ across a spread of programs. Credits are the full traditional track; the advanced standing column is the reduced track for BSW graduates.
| Program | GRE policy | Credits | Advanced standing | Field education | CSWE status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Walden University online MSW | Not required | 92 quarter credits | 52 quarter credits, 3.0 GPA | 900 hours | Accredited |
| Fordham University Online MSW | Not required | 62 | 31 credits, BSW within 5 years | 900 hours (500 advanced standing) | Accredited |
| Campbellsville University online MSW | Not required | 60 | 30 to 39 credits, 3.0 GPA | 900 hours | Accredited |
| Savannah State University MSW | Not required with a 2.8 GPA | 60 | 33 credits, BSW within five years, 3.0 GPA | 900 clock hours | Accredited |
| Appalachian State advanced standing MSW | Required unless waived | 33 | BSW within 7 years, 3.2 in BSW courses | Face-to-face practicum | Accredited |
| University of Vermont MSW | Optional | 60 | 39 credits, BSW within 7 years | 15 hours a week minimum | Accredited |
| Eastern Oregon University Online MSW | Not required | 62 quarter credits | 30 credits, 3.0 GPA | 900 hours (500 advanced standing) | Candidacy |
| UTHealth Houston MSW in Clinical Social Work | Not required | 62 | 30 credits, applications open Fall 2026 | 1,020 hours (540 advanced standing) | Pre-Candidacy |
Two patterns stand out. GRE requirements are now the exception, and the real gatekeeping happens in the advanced standing rules: a recency window on the BSW and a GPA floor in social work courses.
GPA Minimums Schools Actually Publish
The GPA figures schools put in writing cluster between 2.75 and 3.5, and most of them attach to advanced standing rather than the traditional track:
- 2.75: Missouri Western State University asks for a 2.75 for advanced standing and offers conditional admission below it.
- 3.0: Walden, Campbellsville, Boston University, Eastern Oregon and Purdue Northwest all set 3.0 for BSW graduates.
- 3.0 overall and 3.2 in the major: CUNY Hunter and UT Rio Grande Valley ask for both.
- 3.25 to 3.3: Ramapo College asks 3.25; Tuskegee asks 3.3.
- 3.5: Florida Atlantic University’s online advanced standing MSW requires a 3.5 in the final 60 BSW credits, and it is open only to Florida residents.
Some schools use GPA to decide other requirements. Savannah State University waives the GRE for applicants with at least a 2.8 GPA. Inter American University of Puerto Rico offers conditional admission to advanced standing applicants with a 2.50 to 2.99 in concentration courses.
If your GPA sits below a school’s floor, look for the words “conditional admission” or “petition” on its admissions page. Several programs in the data use them.
Do You Need the GRE for an MSW?
Usually not. Of the programs whose pages address testing, 151 say no GRE is required, 22 make it optional or waivable, and 7 require a test. Browse the full set on the MSW programs with no GRE list.
The programs that still require a test are specific:
- The Army-UK MSW at the University of Kentucky asks for a GRE of at least 290 combined verbal and quantitative, taken within five years.
- Inter American University of Puerto Rico requires a standardized graduate admission test for its clinical and administration MSW tracks.
- Appalachian State asks for GRE scores unless they are waived.
Optional-test schools include California State University, Fullerton and the University of Vermont. If you have strong scores, submit them there; if not, the rest of the field gives you plenty of test-free choices.

Advanced Standing Requirements for BSW Graduates
CSWE requires every accredited MSW program to offer advanced standing to graduates of CSWE-accredited BSW programs, so you do not repeat generalist content. In practice, 474 of the 530 options list it, and the median advanced standing track runs 33 credits against a 60-credit median for the full degree. Check your own eligibility with the advanced standing checker.
The rules that decide whether you qualify:
| Requirement | Tighter end | Looser end |
|---|---|---|
| How recent the BSW must be | Five years at USC, Fordham, CUNY Hunter and Ramapo | 10 years at Syracuse, Delaware and UNC Charlotte; 15 years at Palo Alto University |
| GPA | 3.5 in the final 60 credits at Florida Atlantic | 2.75 at Missouri Western |
| Grades in specific courses | A or B in set research and practice courses at the University of Puerto Rico | A minimum C in bachelor’s-level social work courses at Oakwood |
| Field record | B or better in the BSW internship at Jacksonville State | Final field evaluation submitted at Oakwood |
| Start date | Fall only at Loyola Chicago and Delaware | Summer starts at Vermont, Alabama and Arkansas |
A few schools also accept international social work degrees evaluated through CSWE’s International Social Work Degree Recognition and Evaluation Service, including UNC Charlotte, Samford and Palo Alto University. The advanced standing MSW programs page ranks every program that offers the reduced track.
What You Commit to Once Admitted: Credits and Field Hours
Admission requirements are only half the picture. The curriculum you sign up for varies widely.
Credits. The median program runs 60 semester credits. Quarter-credit schools look larger on paper: Walden lists 92 quarter credits, Palo Alto University 88 and the University of Denver’s Western Colorado MSW 81. USC and NYU sit at 48 and 65.
Field hours. CSWE sets a floor of 900 field education hours for master’s programs, and the median verified program lists exactly 900. Some go further: USC lists 1,200 practicum hours, East Carolina 1,032, UTHealth Houston 1,020, and Loyola Chicago, Barry and Ramapo 1,000 each.
Where the hours happen. Field placements are in person even in online programs. UNC Charlotte’s online MSW requires 16 hours a week at an agency during fall and spring. CSWE lets programs allow a placement at your current employer if the work ties to the competencies; NYU’s hybrid MSW, for example, lets the 900-hour placement be with your employer.
If you work full time, the field requirement matters more than the GPA floor. Look at the part-time MSW programs for plans that spread placements out.
Why CSWE Status Belongs on Your Requirements List
Accreditation is a requirement you meet later, at the licensing board. CSWE notes that most state and territory requirements call for graduation from a CSWE-accredited program before you can be licensed or sit for a licensing exam.
Of the 530 options, 480 are accredited and 49 are in candidacy, and a few sit at the earlier pre-candidacy stage, such as UTHealth Houston’s clinical MSW. Candidacy programs include Oakwood University, Point Loma Nazarene, the University of Delaware and Eastern Oregon. Before you enroll in one, check its current status in CSWE’s directory and read how your state board treats candidacy graduates on the CSWE-accredited MSW programs page.
Is Social Work a Professional Degree?
Yes, the MSW is built as professional training. CSWE’s standards define nine competencies every program must teach, from ethical and professional behavior through engagement, assessment, intervention and evaluation with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities. Master’s programs add specialized practice on top of that generalist base.
Specialization names show how differently schools apply that framework: Advanced Clinical Practice, Child Welfare (Title IV-E), School Social Work (PPS), Forensic Social Work, Gerontology Social Work, Community Leadership and Program Administration, and Advanced generalist practice with emphasis on rural and Indigenous communities all appear in the verified set. The MSW specializations guide compares them.
The degree also sets up the social worker education requirements that come after graduation. The BLS notes that clinical licensure takes an MSW from an accredited program, supervised clinical experience after graduation and a clinical exam. The social work license guide and the LCSW requirements page cover each state’s rules, and the license pathway tool maps them for your state.
How to Check Whether You Meet a Program’s Requirements
Work through this list before you pay any application fee:
- Bachelor’s degree: confirm it is from a regionally accredited school. Any major works.
- BSW date: if you have a BSW, compare its graduation year with the program’s window, which ranges from five years at USC to 15 at Palo Alto University.
- GPA: find the program’s floor and whether it applies overall, to the last 60 credits or to social work courses only.
- Testing: check whether the program is among the 151 with no GRE or the 7 that require a test.
- Field education: note the hour total and whether placements run weekdays, which decides whether you can keep your job.
- CSWE status: accredited or candidacy, and what your state board accepts.
- Start term: some advanced standing tracks admit only in summer or only in fall.
Once you have a shortlist, the program matcher filters by format, GRE policy and advanced standing, and the MSW cost guide shows what each track costs. If you are also weighing a law, public health or business degree, see the MSW dual degree programs page. Programs in your state are on pages such as New York and North Carolina.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Get an MSW Without a Social Work Bachelor's Degree?
Yes. The BLS notes that a BSW is not required for MSW admission and that psychology, public policy and social science majors are common. Without a BSW you follow the traditional track, which runs about 60 credits (the median across verified programs) instead of the 33-credit median for advanced standing.
Does an Associate Degree in Social Work Meet MSW Requirements?
No. CSWE's 2022 standards require an earned baccalaureate degree for admission to a master's program. An associate degree can count toward that bachelor's, and many community college credits transfer into a BSW, but you need the bachelor's before you apply for the MSW.
Can Work Experience Replace MSW Courses?
No. CSWE's accreditation standards bar programs from granting social work course credit for life experience or previous work experience. Experience can still help your application, and CSWE lets programs allow a field placement at your own employer if the assignments tie to the social work competencies.
What Happens if Your BSW Is Older Than the Advanced Standing Limit?
Some schools leave a door open. Oakwood University lets BSW holders past its five-year limit petition with a 3.0 GPA, the University of Arkansas accepts older degrees by petition, and UT Arlington's MSW director may review BSWs conferred before 2010. Elsewhere you apply to the full-length track.
Do Online MSW Programs Have Different Admission Requirements?
The degree rule is the same, since CSWE standards apply to every program option. The practical difference is field education: UNC Charlotte's online MSW requires 16 hours a week of in-person practicum, and the University of Alabama's primarily online MSW requires 1,000 in-person practicum hours on the traditional track.
How Long Does an MSW Take Once You Are Admitted?
Most traditional programs take about two years full time; the BLS says master's programs generally take 2 years. Advanced standing can cut that to as little as nine months at Fordham or Campbellsville, and part-time plans stretch to three or four years at schools such as Syracuse and Boston University.
