How Much Does an MSW Cost? Tuition, Aid and Ways to Pay Less

How Much Does an MSW Cost?

How much is an MSW? Across 339 programs that publish a per-credit rate and a credit total, the median estimated tuition is $40,180, with a range from $11,070 at the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras to $138,900 at Texas Christian University. Advanced standing roughly halves the bill at many schools, and new graduate borrowers can take up to $20,500 a year in federal unsubsidized loans, capped at $100,000. The sticker price of an MSW depends on three things you can control: the school’s per-credit rate, whether you qualify for advanced standing, and whether you pay the resident rate. The figures below come from tuition pages for 530 MSW options checked in September 2026. Estimated tuition means the published per-credit rate times the program’s credits, before fees.

How Much Is an MSW? The Real Range

The median estimated tuition across 339 programs with a published rate and credit total is $40,180. Half the programs cost less, half cost more, and the spread is wide:

  • Lowest: the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras, at $205 per credit for 54 credits, comes to $11,070.
  • Middle: the median per-credit rate among 340 programs that publish one is $675.
  • Highest: Texas Christian University, at $2,315 per credit for 60 credits, comes to $138,900. USC charges the top per-credit rate in the set, $2,322 per unit.

Credits move the total as much as the rate. Most traditional programs run around 60 credits, but USC’s 48-unit MSW and Loyola Chicago’s 49-credit program show how a shorter curriculum offsets a higher rate.

What Specific MSW Programs Cost

Here is a cross-section of public and private programs, with the full-track estimate next to the advanced standing estimate where the school prices both. Where a school charges residents and nonresidents differently, the figure uses the resident rate.

Program Published rate Credits Estimated tuition Advanced standing estimate
Savannah State University MSW $203 per credit in-state 60 $12,180 (resident) $6,699
Fort Valley State University online MSW $231 per credit plus $380 online fee 54 $12,474 $6,930
UNC Charlotte online MSW $341.21 per credit NC resident 60 $20,473 (resident) $13,307
University of Maine MSW, Orono $596 per credit resident 57 $33,972 (resident) $25,032
CUNY Hunter College MSW $620 per credit NYS resident 60 $37,200 (resident) $22,320
Walden University online MSW $570 per quarter credit 92 quarter credits $52,440 $29,640
Loyola University Chicago MSW $1,180 per credit 49 $57,820 $27,140
Boston University Online MSW $1,018 per credit 65 $66,170 $43,774
Syracuse University MSW $1,226 per credit 60 $73,560 $44,136
Texas Christian University MSW $2,315 per credit 60 $138,900 $69,450

In this table, the public universities charging residents all come in below the $40,180 median, while the private schools charging more than $1,000 per credit land between $57,820 and $138,900.

Advanced Standing Is the Biggest Discount

If you hold a recent BSW from a CSWE-accredited program, advanced standing cuts the credits you pay for. Of the programs with an estimate, 251 also price their advanced standing track, and at schools like these the advanced standing estimate is about half the full program:

  • Texas Christian: $138,900 full track, $69,450 advanced standing.
  • Ramapo College: $58,044 for the 60-credit tracks and $29,022 for advanced standing, both figures from the school’s own program page.
  • Loyola Chicago: $57,820 full, $27,140 advanced standing.

Advanced standing tracks often run about a year full time, so you also give up fewer months of income. The advanced standing MSW programs page ranks every program that offers it, and the advanced standing checker tells you whether your BSW date and GPA qualify. Eligibility rules are on the MSW requirements page.

Residency, Online Rates and Fees Change the Bill

At a public school, residency can change your rate more than any choice of format. The University of Vermont charges $706 per credit to residents and $1,944 to out-of-state students. UNC Charlotte charges $341.21 to NC residents and $1,305.87 to nonresidents.

Some online programs remove that gap:

  • The University of Alaska Anchorage charges every admitted online MSW student the resident rate of $549 per credit, an estimated $17,019 for its 31-credit program.
  • Ramapo College charges $967.40 per credit in-state and out-of-state alike.

Online is not automatically less expensive, though. Among the 197 online programs with an estimate, the median is $40,180, the same as the full set, and the range runs from $11,155 at Florida Atlantic University’s resident rate to $116,155 at NYU. The affordable online MSW programs list sorts online options by estimated tuition.

Fees sit on top of every estimate. Examples from tuition pages:

  • Walden: a $185 program fee each quarter.
  • Northern Arizona University: a $690 MSW program fee each semester.
  • UTHealth Houston: a $235 clinical placement fee each semester.
  • Florida Atlantic: a $30 per credit distance learning fee on online courses.

Add these before you compare totals, and use the MSW cost calculator to run your own numbers.

Check the year on every rate, too. Barry University lists $700 per credit for 2026-27 in its student accounts schedule, while its online MSW page still cites $675 per credit for 2024-25. Some schools also publish their own totals, which are worth comparing with the per-credit math: Eastern University lists $28,800 in tuition and fees for its two-year online MSW and $14,400 for advanced standing, and USC’s tuition page gives an estimated total of $111,456 for its online MSW. When a school’s own total and the rate-times-credits estimate differ, check which fees and which year the school’s figure includes.

Federal Loans for an MSW in 2026

The federal loan rules changed on July 1, 2026. If all your loans are first disbursed on or after that date, these are the terms for graduate study:

Federal loan term New graduate borrowers, 2026-27
Annual unsubsidized loan limit $20,500
Total limit for graduate study $100,000
Lifetime limit, all levels $257,500
Fixed interest rate 8.07%
Loan fee 1.057% of each disbursement
Grace period after you leave school 6 months
Grad PLUS loans No longer available

Three practical consequences for MSW students:

  • The cap fits lower-cost public programs. Savannah State, Fort Valley State, UNC Charlotte and Hunter all have estimated tuition below the $40,180 median for the whole degree, at resident rates.
  • High-cost private programs leave a gap. A $73,560 estimate at Syracuse or $138,900 at TCU spread over two years exceeds what federal unsubsidized loans cover, before living costs.
  • Part-time study shrinks the yearly loan. Federal Student Aid adjusts the annual limit for less than full-time enrollment, and you must be enrolled at least half time to borrow.

Unsubsidized loans do not require financial need, but interest accrues from the day each loan is disbursed. File the FAFSA to be considered.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness for Social Workers

Many MSW graduates work for employers that qualify for PSLF. The program forgives your remaining Direct Loan balance after 120 qualifying monthly payments made while you work full time, an average of at least 30 hours a week, for:

  • a federal, state, local or tribal government organization, including the U.S. military; or
  • a not-for-profit that is tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3).

Qualifying depends on who employs you, not on the job you do. For-profit organizations, including for-profit contractors, do not qualify, which matters if your plan is a for-profit private practice after licensure. Check an employer with the PSLF Employer Search on studentaid.gov before you accept an offer.

The 2026 changes matter here too. If you have any loan first disbursed on or after July 1, 2026, only full, on-time payments under the Repayment Assistance Plan count toward PSLF; payments under the Tiered Standard Plan do not. Because you need 120 payments, forgiveness takes at least 10 years.

Child Welfare Training Funds

Child welfare is the one area with a dedicated federal training stream. Federal regulations let state child welfare agencies claim 75% federal matching funds for training people employed by, or preparing for employment with, the Title IV-E agency. The same rule allows long-term training at educational institutions.

Some MSW programs build a track around this funding. Specializations in the verified set include Child Welfare (Title IV-E), Child Welfare Social Work Practice and Family & Child Welfare. Terms are set by each state and school, so read the program’s own Title IV-E page before you count on support. The child and family MSW programs page lists programs with a child welfare focus.

What You Can Expect to Earn Afterward

Pay helps you judge how much debt is reasonable. BLS May 2025 medians for the four social worker occupations:

  • Child, family and school social workers: $59,550.
  • Mental health and substance abuse social workers: $60,280.
  • Healthcare social workers: $67,880.
  • Social workers, all other: $71,900.

Set those medians beside the tuition table before you borrow: the same degree can cost $12,180 or $138,900, and the paycheck afterward does not depend on which school you chose. The MSW careers guide covers the settings behind those numbers.

How to Lower What You Pay

A checklist for cutting the cost of an MSW, each point tied to figures above:

  • Claim advanced standing if you have a recent BSW. It roughly halves the estimate at schools such as TCU, Ramapo and Loyola Chicago.
  • Study in your home state’s public system. Resident rates at UNC Charlotte, Maine and Hunter keep estimates between $20,473 and $37,200.
  • Look for online programs that waive the nonresident premium, such as Alaska Anchorage and Ramapo.
  • Count fees and credits, not just the rate. A 48-credit program at a high rate can undercut a 65-credit program at a lower one.
  • Line up a PSLF-eligible employer if you will borrow, and keep your new loans on the Repayment Assistance Plan.
  • Ask about a Title IV-E track if child welfare is your goal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an Online MSW Less Expensive Than a Campus MSW?

Not by default. Among online programs with an estimate, the median estimated tuition is $40,180, the same as the full set. What changes the price is residency: the University of Alaska Anchorage charges every admitted online MSW student its resident rate of $549 per credit, while UNC Charlotte's online MSW charges NC residents $341.21 per credit and nonresidents $1,305.87.

Can You Use Grad PLUS Loans for an MSW in 2026?

Not as a new borrower. Federal Student Aid says it is no longer possible to receive a Direct PLUS Loan for graduate or professional students if all your loans are first disbursed on or after July 1, 2026. Unsubsidized loans are capped at $20,500 a year and $100,000 in total for graduate study.

Does Part-Time Enrollment Reduce Your Federal Loan Amount?

Yes. Federal Student Aid says the annual loan limit is adjusted if you enroll less than full time, and you must be enrolled at least half time to borrow at all. Part-time MSW students should plan for a smaller yearly loan.

Do Social Workers Qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness?

Social workers employed full time by a government agency or a 501(c)(3) nonprofit can qualify. PSLF forgives the remaining Direct Loan balance after 120 qualifying monthly payments. For loans first disbursed on or after July 1, 2026, only full, on-time payments under the Repayment Assistance Plan count.

What Is the Interest Rate on Graduate Loans for an MSW?

Direct Unsubsidized Loans for graduate students first disbursed between July 1, 2026 and June 30, 2027 carry a fixed rate of 8.07%, with a 1.057% loan fee taken from each disbursement. Interest accrues while you are in school.

Where Is Advanced Standing Least Expensive?

Among the lowest-priced programs, the clinical MSW advanced program at Universidad Ana G. Mendez-Gurabo has an estimated tuition of $5,980, Savannah State University's advanced standing track is $6,699 at the in-state rate, and Fort Valley State University's is $6,930.
