MSW Cost and Loan Calculator
How Much Does an MSW Cost, and Will Federal Loans Cover It?
Tuition for an MSW is the published rate times the credits you need, plus fees; advanced standing cuts the credits roughly in half for BSW graduates. Since July 1, 2026, new graduate borrowers can take at most $20,500 a year and $100,000 in total in federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans, with no Grad PLUS, so programs that cost more leave a gap to fill with savings, scholarships, employer aid or private loans. Pick a program below to see your numbers.
How the Calculator Works
Choose any program on this site and the calculator fills in the credits and per-credit tuition the school publishes. Programs that publish a program total fill in that total; programs that publish tuition per term, per year or per course show the figure in the note under the search box, so you can enter it yourself. Fees vary a lot from school to school, so add the fees from the school's tuition page if you know them.
The federal loan figure follows the 2026 limits: at most $20,500 for each year of study, never more than $100,000 in total, and never more than what you still need after your savings and aid. Each disbursement loses the 1.06% loan fee, so the calculator borrows enough to cover the fee when the limit allows.
Interest starts on the day each loan is paid out. The calculator adds the interest that builds from each year's disbursement to the end of the six-month grace period, then spreads the balance over the term you pick at 8.07%. The last figure divides that payment by the monthly median pay for the social worker occupation you choose, so you can see whether the debt fits the job. Choose "Advanced standing" and the calculator uses the program's advanced standing credits instead.
What Changed for Graduate Loans in 2026
For anyone whose loans are all first paid out on or after July 1, 2026, Grad PLUS loans are gone and graduate Direct Unsubsidized Loans are capped at $20,500 a year and $100,000 in total. Before this, Grad PLUS could cover the full cost of attendance. A program with tuition above $20,500 a year now needs another source of money for the rest, which is one reason the most affordable online MSW programs list matters.
Awards are reduced if you enroll less than full time, which affects many part-time students. Some child welfare agencies and health systems offer tuition assistance or stipends (federal Title IV-E child welfare stipends among them) in exchange for a work commitment.
Ways to Lower the Number
- Compare estimated tuition, not sticker rates. A low per-credit rate on a long program can cost more than a higher rate on a short one. The most affordable online MSW programs ranking multiplies the two for you.
- Watch residency rules. Many public universities charge nonresidents more, even online. Programs marked "resident rate" in the lists publish a higher nonresident figure.
- Check quarter credits. Schools on the quarter system state credits in quarter hours, so compare total estimated tuition rather than per-credit rates.
- Use advanced standing if you can. A CSWE-accredited BSW can cut the MSW roughly in half. See advanced standing MSW programs.
- Plan for public service. Most social work employers are government agencies or 501(c)(3) not-for-profits, so Public Service Loan Forgiveness is realistic for many MSW graduates: it cancels the remaining Direct Loan balance after 120 qualifying payments while you work full time for one.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Much Can You Borrow in Federal Loans for an MSW?
If all your loans are first disbursed on or after July 1, 2026, you can borrow up to $20,500 a year in Direct Unsubsidized Loans and $100,000 in total as a graduate student who was never a professional student. Grad PLUS loans aren't available to new borrowers. Your school sets the amount based on cost of attendance and other aid, and awards are reduced if you enroll less than full time.
Does Interest Build While You're in School?
Yes. You're responsible for the interest on a Direct Unsubsidized Loan during all periods, including while you're in school and during the 6-month grace period. That's why the calculator shows your balance when repayment starts, not only what you borrowed.
What Interest Rate Applies to Graduate Loans in 2026-27?
Graduate Direct Unsubsidized Loans first disbursed from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027 carry a fixed 8.07% rate, and a 1.06% loan fee is taken from each disbursement.
Can Public Service Loan Forgiveness Help With MSW Debt?
Often, yes: most social workers work for government agencies or 501(c)(3) not-for-profits, which are qualifying employers. If you work full time (at least 30 hours a week on average) for one, the remaining Direct Loan balance is forgiven after 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying plan. For-profit employers, including many private practices, don't qualify.
Why Do Some Programs Show No Per-Credit Rate?
Some schools publish tuition per term, per year, per course or as a program total. The calculator shows that figure when you pick the program; published totals are entered for you, and for other bases you can convert the figure or enter it as the total.
