What Can These Tools Help You Decide?

Four decisions shape an MSW: which program fits your life, whether a BSW can shorten it, how you'll get licensed where you'll practice, and whether you can pay for it. Each tool runs on the same verified records as the rest of the site (530 programs at 404 schools, checked on official school pages), CSWE's directory, 52 state boards' licensing rules and the federal loan limits that took effect July 1, 2026.

Why These Tools Exist

Most MSW rankings list schools without telling you what a program costs in total, whether your BSW qualifies for advanced standing, or what your state board requires after graduation. Since July 1, 2026, new graduate borrowers can take no more than $20,500 a year and $100,000 in total in federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans, with no Grad PLUS, so total cost now decides more choices than it used to. The cost and loan calculator shows that gap for any program before you apply.

Licensing is where an MSW pays off, and every state does it differently. The license pathway planner puts your board's steps, exams and supervised hours in one place, next to the programs in your state.

Every program on this site was checked against the school's own website. Accreditation status comes only from the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) directory, license rules from each state's social work board, and graduate counts from the U.S. Department of Education (IPEDS).
