CSWE-Accredited MSW Programs

Which MSW Programs Are CSWE-Accredited, and Why Does It Matter?

CSWE accredited MSW programs are master's programs that the Council on Social Work Education's Board of Accreditation has reviewed against its Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards. This site lists 480 accredited program options at 354 schools, checked against CSWE's directory in September 2026, with estimated tuition from $11,070 at the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras to $138,900 at Texas Christian University. Accreditation matters because the Social Work Licensure Compact requires an accredited MSW for its master's and clinical categories, and because only a BSW from an accredited program qualifies you for advanced standing.

What CSWE Accreditation Means for an MSW

The Council on Social Work Education accredits social work degrees through its Board of Accreditation (BOA), which the Council on Higher Education Accreditation recognizes for that job. The BOA accredits bachelor’s, master’s and practice doctorate programs. It does not accredit PhDs, associate degrees or minors.

For a master’s program, accreditation means CSWE has reviewed it against the 2022 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS). Every accredited program has to meet the same standards, whether it teaches on campus, online or both. CSWE says so directly: delivery method does not change educational quality.

CSWE does not rank programs. It lists them. So the questions you still have to answer yourself are price, format, length and fit, and that is what the rest of this page covers.

Why an Accredited MSW Matters for Your License

Accreditation and licensure are separate systems. CSWE accredits schools; a board in each state licenses social workers, and the rules differ by state. The link between them is that license rules lean on accreditation.

The clearest example is the Social Work Licensure Compact. Its master’s and clinical multistate license categories both require an accredited MSW or higher, plus a passing score on a qualifying national exam. The clinical category adds 3,000 hours or two years of postgraduate supervised clinical practice. The compact has reached activation, but multistate licenses are not being issued yet.

The BLS says clinical social workers need a master’s degree, supervised clinical experience and a license from their state. If a clinical license is your goal, an accredited MSW is the starting point. Check your state’s tiers with the license pathway tool or the LCSW requirements guide.

Key Numbers Across 480 Accredited Program Options

Accredited programs make up 480 of the 530 MSW program options on this site, at 354 of 404 schools, across 53 states and territories. The other 49 options sit in candidacy or pre-candidacy.

  • Formats: 252 options run on campus, 231 online and 78 hybrid. Some schools offer more than one, so these overlap.
  • Part-time plans: 322 options publish a part-time route.
  • Advanced standing: 431 options offer a shorter track for BSW graduates. The median advanced standing program runs 33 credits against 60 for the full degree.
  • Field hours: the median is 900, which matches CSWE’s minimum.
  • GRE: 140 options say no GRE is required and 22 let you waive it. Only 7 require it.
  • Price: among the 314 options with an estimated tuition, the median is $40,138. Published per-credit rates run from $203 at Savannah State University to $2,322 at USC, with a median of $670.

15 Most Affordable CSWE-Accredited MSW Programs

How this list is ranked: lowest estimated tuition first. Estimated tuition is the school's published per-credit rate times the credits it states, before fees, or the school's own published program total, for programs that publish those figures (one program per school). General graduate rates and cost-of-attendance figures are left out. Rates were read on each school's site in September 2026. Only programs at schools CSWE lists as accredited are included. Public schools' figures are usually the in-state rate.

480 programs

Program facts come from each school's own pages, reviewed September 2026. Estimated tuition is the published per-credit rate times the stated credits, before fees, or the school's published program total; "resident rate" means the school charges nonresidents more. CSWE status comes from CSWE's directory of accredited programs.

CSWE Accredited MSW Programs Compared by Cost

The table below spans the full price range of accredited programs. Estimated tuition is the published per-credit rate times credits, before fees. Where a school lists resident and nonresident rates, the figure uses the resident rate.

Program Format Credits Estimated tuition Advanced standing
University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras, Maestría en Trabajo Social On campus 54 $11,070 42 credits, 1.5 years full time
Savannah State University MSW On campus 60 $12,180 33 credits, 12 months
University of North Alabama online MSW Online 30 (advanced standing) $14,850 30 credits, 12 months
Fort Hays State University clinical MSW Online 66 $23,940 36 credits
Salisbury University hybrid MSW Hybrid 62 $28,086 32 credits, 12 or 18 months
Southern University at New Orleans MSW Campus or online 60 $28,500 Three semesters
USF Online MSW Online 60 $33,000 35 credits
Walden University online MSW Online 92 quarter credits $52,440 52 quarter credits
Ohio State University MSW Campus or online 63 $53,842 43 credits, 1 year full time
USC MSW, Los Angeles and San Diego Campus or hybrid 48 $111,456 24 units, 12 months
Texas Christian University MSW On campus 60 $138,900 30 credits, nine months

Two patterns stand out. Public universities fill the low end: all 15 of the most affordable accredited programs are at public universities or Puerto Rico schools. And accreditation does not track price. TCU, at $138,900, and Savannah State, at $12,180, meet the same standards. For a wider cost view, see the most affordable online MSW programs or run your own numbers in the MSW cost calculator.

Candidacy and Pre-Candidacy: What Happens to Your Degree

New MSW programs do not start accredited. They move through three stages, and each one means something different for you.

  • Pre-candidacy: the program applied and CSWE staff approved its first benchmark, clearing it for a candidacy review within a year. The BOA has not reviewed it yet.
  • Candidacy: the program has shown a commitment to the standards but has not demonstrated full compliance. CSWE says candidacy typically takes three years and does not guarantee accreditation.
  • Initial accreditation: the BOA confirms the program meets the standards.

The rule that matters most is the retroactive date. When a program earns initial accreditation, CSWE backdates it to the academic year it entered candidacy. If you start in or after that year, you count as a graduate of an accredited program once accreditation comes through.

The risk sits at both edges. If you enter before the program reached candidacy, your degree is not covered. If the program never earns accreditation, no student’s degree is. On this site, 36 schools hold candidacy and 13 hold pre-candidacy. Ask each one which academic year its candidacy began before you commit.

Online Accredited Social Work Master’s Programs Meet the Same Standards

CSWE holds online and campus programs to one set of standards. If your state board requires an accredited degree, CSWE says it makes no difference whether you earned it online or on campus, in state or out of state.

That does not make every online program interchangeable. Field education is where formats differ most, because practicum hours happen in person at an agency:

Before you enroll online, find out how the school places students in your area. The online MSW programs page compares 261 online options.

Advanced Standing Requires an Accredited BSW

Advanced standing lets you skip the generalist year, and CSWE sets one firm floor: it goes only to graduates of accredited BSW programs, degrees recognized through CSWE’s international evaluation service, or Canadian degrees covered by CSWE’s agreement with Canada’s accreditor. A psychology or sociology degree does not qualify, however strong.

Beyond that floor, each school writes its own rules, and time limits vary widely:

Program Advanced standing length How recent your BSW must be
University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras 1.5 years full time Within five years, with A or B grades in set courses
University of Arkansas online advanced standing 1 year Within the past 6 years, 3.0 GPA in the last 60 hours
Jacksonville State University One calendar year, full time only Within seven years, B or better in the BSW internship
Alabama State University 12 months Within eight years

Check your eligibility against these rules with the advanced standing checker, or compare every option on the advanced standing MSW programs page.

Field Education: 900 Hours Is the Floor

CSWE requires at least 900 field hours for a master’s degree. Advanced standing students need 900 across their BSW and MSW combined, which is why one-year tracks such as those at the University of North Alabama (500 hours) and Jacksonville State (at least 450) ask for far fewer.

Many accredited programs go past the minimum:

More hours mean more supervised experience, but also more unpaid time if your placement is unpaid. CSWE’s 2022 standards allow paid and employment-based placements; whether a school offers them is its own policy.

What You Study in an Accredited Program

CSWE’s model is competency-based. You learn generalist practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities first, then a specialized area. Among the 480 accredited options, 224 list a mental health focus, 129 a macro focus and 104 child and family work. Smaller groups cover health (60), school social work (37), aging (34), substance use (23) and military families (11).

Schools name these in their own words. Real examples from accredited programs include:

  • Clinical: “Advanced Clinical Practice,” “Clinical/Medical social work (health and behavioral health)”
  • Macro: “Policy, Administration and Community Practice (PAC),” “Community Leadership and Program Administration”
  • Population focus: “Child Welfare (Title IV-E),” “Gerontological Social Work,” “School Social Work (PPS)”
  • Setting focus: “Advanced generalist practice with emphasis on rural and Indigenous communities,” “Forensic Social Work”

Browse by track on the clinical MSW programs, macro social work and MSW specializations pages.

How to Choose Among Accredited Programs

Once accreditation is settled, these checks separate the programs:

  • Confirm the status yourself. CSWE posts status changes 30 days after each board meeting, so look up the program in CSWE’s directory the week you apply.
  • Compare estimated tuition, not sticker rates. Per-credit rates run from $203 to $2,322, and credit totals from 30 for some advanced standing programs to 92 quarter credits at Walden, so the total can move either way.
  • Ask about residency. Some schools charge one rate to everyone online; the University of Alaska Anchorage gives all admitted online MSW students the resident rate of $549 per credit.
  • Check advanced standing time limits if your BSW is more than five years old.
  • Match field hours to your schedule. A 1,200-hour practicum is a different commitment from a 900-hour one.
  • Pick a specialization tied to the license you want. A clinical track fits the LCSW route; macro fits policy and administration.

Pay varies by setting. The BLS reports a May 2025 median of $61,780 for social workers, with healthcare social workers at $67,880. The careers guide covers what each license tier lets you do, and the program matcher narrows the 480 options to the ones that fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Program in CSWE Candidacy the Same as Accredited?

No. CSWE says candidacy means a program has shown a commitment to meeting the standards but has not yet demonstrated full compliance. Candidacy is typically a three-year process and does not guarantee initial accreditation.

If My Program Earns Accreditation After I Enroll, Is My Degree Accredited?

It is if the program reached candidacy in or before the academic year you started. CSWE backdates initial accreditation to the year candidacy was granted, so a student who entered in fall 2025 at a program granted candidacy in 2025-26 counts as an accredited graduate once the program is accredited. Students who entered before candidacy are not covered.

Does CSWE Rank MSW Programs?

No. CSWE states that it does not rank, recommend or comment on the quality of accredited and candidate programs, because all of them must meet the current set of standards.

Does CSWE Accredit PhD or Associate Degrees in Social Work?

No. CSWE's Board of Accreditation accredits baccalaureate, master's and practice doctorate social work programs, plus post-master's fellowships. It does not accredit PhD programs, associate degrees or social work minors.

Can I Get Paid for My MSW Field Placement?

CSWE's standards allow it. The 2022 EPAS lets programs set their own policies on employment-based placements, and CSWE's interpretation guide says paid placements in any form, such as a salary or stipend, are permitted. Each program decides whether it offers them.

Where Do I Check a Program's Accreditation Status?

CSWE's Program Directory lists every accredited, candidate and pre-candidate program. CSWE posts changes in status publicly 30 days after each Board of Accreditation meeting, so recheck before you apply.
